It’s been a year since Innoveghtive first launched. Now, I have a better grasp on life and business. It’s time for the Web site to reflect that insight.
My last day at Hewlett-Packard was April 25, 2006. They’d laid me off after over five years working for them, and Compaq before. At the time, my feelings were mixed: after all, I’d never wanted to work for a large company for any more than two or three years, but they were pretty good to me, and I’d developed a number of friendships.
In retrospect, of course, my departure is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I took the chance to start Innoveghtive, and parlayed my freelance work into a full-time gig. And thus far, it’s been a wonderful experience.
My first step, after coming up with a truly cool name for the business, was to build a web site. It was clearly an effort to get my foot out the door as quickly as possible; it was simple and to the point.
Unfortunately, it also didn’t meet many of my needs as a business, and didn’t truly reflect my core values. The first and foremost problem was its very
In the new site here, you’ll see that my work is front and centre. The rotating graphical banner (done without Flash, naturally) will show the latest stuff I have going on, with links to more examples.
And my favourite part of the home page is its high level of interactivity. In fact, ALL of it is frequently-changing stuff: this blog is the main feature, but there are two other features that will help you to both keep track of me and what’s interesting:
- Twitter status: I’m using Twitter, a notification service that keeps friends and business associates connected. I’ll update my status several times a day with a message showing where I am or what I’m dealing with. If you’re a client, don’t be surprised to find yourself mentioned! As long as we don’t have a sneaky quiet arrangement set up, of course.Linked list: I browse the net quite a bit. When I come across interesting sites, I’ll collate them in a linked list, with a little description. These will be stored in an archive for future reference as well.
The other new feature for this version of Innoveghtive is a section called Special Projects. I’ve been doing a lot of work developing two projects in particular, and as they become more central to the business, they’ll need a place of greater prominence on this site. I’ve no doubt I’ll be adding to the two that are there today.
The new site is a reflexion of my understanding of what makes a great web site in 2007: open, transparent communication with customers and friends, and modern, professional design.
It’s quite possible I’ll rip it all apart next year. But today, I’m excited about my new look, and I hope you are too. Comments — especially positive ones — are welcome, at my email address.
